Create PDF of Safari Pages Using the Camera Roll

I have been getting marketing calls at my home and wanted to reregister on the do not call list. I did this using Safari on my iPhone. At the end of the process I wanted to print the receipt to save for my records. If I had been on my iMac, I would have created a PDF and saved it. On my iPhone, I took a screen shot then opened ScannerPro and opened the screen shot of the Do Not Call page that I had saved to my camera roll. Quickly, I created a PDF and saved it directly to a folder on my iDisk. Deleted the screen shot from the camera roll, and, mission accomplished. I used to email to myself a link to Safari pages to create and save a PDF later when in front of my computer. But now I am going to cut out that step by using the Camera Roll and ScannerPro.

Hands free dictation using speakphone with iPhone Dragon Dictation

I have been using the Dragon Dictation app on my phone to compose emails and documents.  Works quite well if I let it process the dictation in short phrases.  My iPhone bluetooth function lets me use my speakerphone in my car to dicate, too.  Fabulous! Only problem, my Outlook contacts are not syncing with my iPhone right now (don't even ask why!!!).  So I have to manually type in contact information to send the email (when off the speakphone and not driving) until one by one I get my contacts into my Mobileme account.   The use of the speakerphone to dictate is wonderful.

New MobileMe Calendar

Yay.  I just tried the new MobileMe Calendar, and I can sent calendar invites to my office email (because not syncing with my iPhone), accept the calendar invite on the office calendar, and now the office and MobileMe calendar match up.  What a time saver, no more having to make double entries on two difference calendars.  What a time saver.  Thanks Apple!  (PS, Apple does have a download for a PC to sync MobileMe with an outlook calendar, but again, if your office does not authorize downloads, that option is not available, and this method of iniviting the office you to the mobileme calendar is a workaround.)

Dragon Dictation App

I have been using the Dragon Dictation App for several months to dictate text to email.  It does well with short sentences but has trouble processing more than a few short lines of text (around 30 characters per line).  Also, it often inserts text in the middle of prior lines instead of at the end of the last line dictation, which can be annoying.

Tips: (1) If you tap a misspelled or wrong word in the text appearing in the main screen of the app, a bubble will appear with an option to delete and in many instances, a short list possible alternative words will appear.  You can click to insert one of the alternative words.  If you click delete, you can dicate again, and hope the new word appears in the same spot, or, you can open the keyboard option and type in the word. (Do not open the keyboard option first, or the bubble will not appear - the bubble seems to only appear when the keyboard is closed.).

(2) There is a keyboard within the app that you can use to make corrections, but that defeats the purpose of dictation when having to use the keyboard frequently.

(3) Email the dictation to yourself, then fix it within your email program or from your desktop. Again, defeats the purpose if you want to dictate and send immediately.  But, if you are dictating for later reference or to edit later, this will work.

Faster Than a Desktop, Saving Text as a Word Document in Quickoffice

Mobile computing away from a desktop can often be quicker than working on a desktop computer. Today's example: creating a word document from text in a pop up screen in Safari on the iPhone (for example, to save a license or terms and conditions when subscribing to Saas).

With two taps on the iPhone screen, you highlight then save the text. Today I used the Quickoffice App to create a new Word document.  When the App opens, tap the new document icon, then Document, then paste and in two more taps, you can save it and move it to a folder or email it.  Almost effortless.   The Quickoffice features are intuitive and fast.

ScannerPro

ScannerPro App never fails to be a great help when away from the office. I was at a client's office discussing a document and we decided to leave the office to go to lunch. Before leaving, I quickly opened and used ScannerPro App to scan, process and email to my assistant several document pages with my handwritten changes. When we returned from lunch, changes were already made and had been emailed back to me. I did not have to ask the client for a fax machine, copier or scanner. I had what I needed in my pocket.
